Open Spaces: A Place to Rest, Receive, and Restore
by Jenn Paustian
Christine Wood

It was always a part of her, continually expressing itself and drawing her attention inward in awe, wonder, and fascination...what was it? Her incredible imagination; brimming with so much curiosity and depth that most often it was misunderstood as something uncontrollable, and thus it became a battlefield between safe havens, or dark underworlds. Yet her imagination needed to soar, nonetheless, and it was truly magical. This surreal world would carry her through a journey too vast to comprehend, yet too brilliant to ignore; the journey of life!

Jenn is an extremely creative individual who loves stories, the beauty of nature surrounding her, whose fibres are interwoven into her heart, especially as it relates to water and the magnificent healing properties of it. Whether it be to quench her thirst with a sip, or satisfy her soul with a plunge, water holds her in its arms to teach her to forever ask questions in order to continuously learn. Thus, her quest for deeper understanding expanded as she grew, eventually beckoning her to travel the globe, become a teacher, as well as many other things. Once one experience was had, it led to the next, and Jenn is certainly known for wanting more in order to live the fullest life possible with conviction.  In order to do this, one must sojourn through diverse trials, as well as encounter victories; obstacles of fire that burn holes in hearts, as well as joy that takes flight into realms of such beauty the human language lacks words to describe. Jenn has experienced both, yet it was her battles with illnesses related to emotional upheaval, injuries, and issues that left her fatigued and in despair, and drove her deep desire to learn and grow, to search for solace in Reiki, where she finally felt safe and understood. It was through her experiences with Reiki that she learned to let go and in turn become. Through the process of Reiki, her body literally shed cellular memories, making space for new cells to grow that ultimately support her healing to this present day.

What is Reiki, one might ask, as did Jenn less than two years ago before receiving her treatment? It was this experience that ultimately led her to becoming a practitioner herself today. Reiki is an ancient Japanese technique used for stress reduction and relaxation, to promote healing that is administered in non-invasive ways by using life-force energy. The Japanese word “Rei” means “of divine origin” and Ki means “life force energy,” so Reiki is a natural way of dissolving energy blocks, opening awareness to understand origins of pain, stress, issues related to the nervous system, and essentially many regions of the mind, body, soul, and spirit. Reiki addresses energy fields that we are not always able to perceive, but can feel. Because we are all made of energy, this modality considers itself a cornerstone for assisting the movement of energy, so that blocked energy, which might cause dis-ease in the body, is able to be released and make room for life-giving energy for healing. Hence, “Open Spaces.”

It is said that our bodies are made mostly of water and that in this water we hold cellular memory and store these memories as stories that ultimately impact the way we perceive and experience the world. So, with all of this in mind, and knowing how safe and supported Jenn felt during her journey of receiving and then studying Reiki, it was only natural that this astute woman would continue to pursue more in order to give back to those in want, or need.

Jenn Paustian’s healing practice called Open Spaces, in Saskatoon, began in August 2024, for individuals curious about experiencing healing and support in a safe environment.
