Health Benefits of Coconut
by Stacey Tress
Coconut, or Cocos nucifera, has fed and nourished populations around the world for generations. The coconut provides a nutritious source of meat, juice, milk, and oil. Coconut is highly nutritious and rich in fibre, vitamins, and minerals. It is classified as a "functional food" because it provides many health benefits beyond its nutritional content. Coconut oil is of special interest because it possesses healing properties far beyond that of any other dietary oil. Pacific Islanders consider coconut oil to be the cure for all illness. The coconut palm is so highly valued by them as both a source of food and medicine that it is called "The Tree of Life." Only recently has modern medical science unlocked the secrets to coconut's amazing healing powers.

Originally practiced at home on female family members as part of a beauty regimen, it is now practiced on men and women in hair salons and spas throughout India and elsewhere. Indian barbers perform Champi, an invigourating scalp massage designed to refresh and stimulate an individual.

Acupuncture and Infertility
by Andrea Kehler
Infertility is on the rise in Canada. Studies are now showing that one in six heterosexual couples will experience difficulties in conceiving. Acupuncture is an ancient form of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that has been used for treating infertility in both men and women for over 2,000 years. Acupuncture is a safe and drug-free therapy with no side effects. It is different from Western Medicine in that Traditional Chinese Medicine treats the root of the problem rather than just treating one’s signs and symptoms.

Loving Mom... Mindfully Balancing Caregiving with Self-care
by Lynne Harley
I must admit to sometimes feeling sorry for myself… and this past week I had a few such days. I found myself wondering how the responsibility of supporting my aging mother fell on my shoulders, and briefly envied my siblings who have physical and emotional distance from the reality of my mother’s aging process. This was a particularly difficult week. I had too much going on in my own life; let alone trying to be there for my mom. I felt vulnerable and fragile. I was doing too much, too fast, and finally realized I was not doing any of it well. What happened to my sense of balance? It was time to take a step back and regain my footing.

Editorial
by Melva Armstrong
As I write this editorial, we are drawing near the eagerly anticipated and transformational date of December 21, 2012. We have lots of snow and fairly reasonable temperatures between minus 12ºC and minus 15ºC in the daytime. I have been enjoying my walks in the snow with the dogs and loving the sparkling fuzzy frost on all the tree branches. The sun hasn’t been showing itself for weeks now, so it feels like living near the North Pole. So much for Saskatchewan’s abundance of sunlight that we always brag so much about when we talk to folks who live near the ocean. That seems to have all changed now and likely those coastal areas are getting heaps of sunshine. So, is this all part of the new world that is being predicted for the future? It is hard to say.
