TRE®: Have You Heard of It?
Bambi Blairby Bambi Blair

TRE, or Trauma and Tension Release Exercises, is a somatic body-based practice created by Dr. Berceli. It was created for people with stress, anxiety, trauma, and burnout. It doesn’t require talking about an event, feeling, or issue; therefore, it overcomes the language barriers that can bring up added stress. It includes a series of easy specifically targeted exercise-based positions and stretches using the muscles of the lower body to activate the tremor, or shaking, in the legs. The exercises safely activate a natural reflex mechanism that releases muscular tension, calming down the nervous system.

It is based on the fundamental idea, backed by research that stress, anxiety, any form of neurological excitement, tension, and trauma is both psychological and physical. Its reflexive muscle vibrations generally feel pleasant and soothing and it has helped many thousands of people globally.

Once finished the process, you lie on the floor, or your surface of choice, and allow, or encourage, these natural vibrations to move through the body, without trying to control them. Most people enjoy the sensation of tremoring, or shaking. For some, they report a physical and/or possible emotional release, without becoming overwhelmed by the process.

I’m energized, full of laughter, and happy! Big smile on my face! My body loves it!

The TRE mechanism, or tremoring, or shaking ability, exists in all mammals and humans. It is the body’s most natural and organic way of unravelling contracted or tight stress patterns, as well as reducing the charge of stress hormones and unhealthy chemical build up, bringing the body back into its natural balance.
TRE is recommended for everyone, and in particular anyone who is feeling stressed, even if they don’t know it, from daily life, anxiety, or traumatizing experiences, including those who have witnessed other people’s trauma.

It helps those who suffer from pain, inflammation, or tightness in their body. It can also help people who have health concerns, as well as addiction. If you have been involved in a vehicle, or work place, accident it can help to overcome the stress and trauma that comes with an accident. So, in short, it can help anyone at any point in their lives including those who might be at a point where stress, burnout, anxiety, and/or pain is compromising their health and well-being.

One of the most important nerves of the ANS (autonomic nervous system) is the vagus nerve (vagus means wandering) because of its all-encompassing connection to everything, literally head to toes, and it’s ability to create beautiful and wonderful effects, in the body.

TRE is Working on the Fascia

Scientists initially thought fascia only provided support to your organs, muscles, and bones. Recently, the definition has expanded to include the tissue that surrounds all of the cells, nerves, joints, tissues, tendons, and ligaments throughout your body, as well. As part of this discovery, they learned that fascia is a part of a system-wide network that provides form and function to every part of your body, and it may be the largest communication system in the body, coordinating with the ANS. It’s a continuous layer of tissue that’s supposed to be flexible. TRE hydrates the fascia.

Some of the many benefits of regular, consistent TRE practice: Reduced Anxiety and Depression; Greater Mental, Emotional, and Physical Resiliency; More Energy and Endurance; Decreased Symptoms of Trauma; Healing of Old Injuries; Reduced Stress from Exercise; Possible Relief from Chronic Medical Conditions; Improved Relationships; Less Workplace Stress; Improved Sleep; Reduced Muscle and Body Pain; Increased Flexibility; AND…after doing it, especially regularly, many people report “A feeling of peace and well-being.” TRE—tension release is for everybody and every body. It is already being practised in over 85 countries.

The accumulation of stress, trauma, and lack of tension release creates the dysregulated nervous system and fosters conflict, hostility, and aggression among humans. Research says we can experience… on average… 50 to 250 stressful events… daily!

Every individual has their own history of stress and trauma, which means that some people may require more sessions with a practitioner/provider, either in person, or over Zoom, and some are just able to learn it and then do the exercises by themselves, if they choose to do it solely on their own. Group classes are available weekly and locally in Regina and online on Zoom.

Once the technique is learned and regulated, it is recommended to continue with TRE a few times a week (or when required) as a self-help tool for good health, resiliency, and freedom from stress.

A friend of Bambi’s, who has fibromyalgia, loves TRE, and calls it “Shakey, Shakey.”
